Without his effort in his publication, this temple will eventually be taken down for the same reason as the Beijing city fortification that you don’t see it nowadays. I also like 余秋雨 writing too. Although it’s a bit “抑鬱” like you are saying. But he revealed and gave a lot of cultural reference. I like your travelogue the same way too. It’s so resourceful for people like us who hasn’t got the chance to LIVE in Vietnam and China. It takes us to virtually new places to have us fantasying about this alienated places.
